Nicolas Ghesquière Speaks To Tom Ford About His Design Future

2 great designers of our time speaks. In an enlightening interview for the Feb issue of Interview magazine, Tom Ford picks the brains of Nicolas Ghesquière, creative director of Balenciaga. The 2 designers chat about golf, temper flares, muses, and most importantly, the design future of Nicolas. All this and more as Tom Ford's admits to Ghesquière: "I want to say that you are my favorite contemporary designer." and how he had been conducting the entire phone interview nude! (OMG!). "I stay this way pretty much 24 hours a day. Richard [Buckley, Ford's boyfriend] is very funny. He is usually completely dressed. He does not like to be naked. So he is in the house; we are having dinner. I am sitting there naked; he is sitting there completely dressed."

But back to Nicolas — where does he see himself in ten years?

"Honestly, I think I will be here at Balenciaga. Maybe not only. I have no idea what I would do for my own collection if that does happen one day. I give so much of myself for Balenciaga that today if you put me in a room and said, “Okay, let’s try to do a Nicolas Ghesquière project,” I wouldn’t be able to do it."

On the possibility of leaving fashion:

"You [Ford] found something you really wanted to do for a long time — to be a director. If I were to find something that is going to be more important to me than fashion — that would be work and love — then I probably would let go. That’s a possibility. But fashion is an addiction."

And anger management.

"I used to be very angry, but I try to be more quiet now. I did [have temper tantrums], but I’m much better now. I think it was because I was so scared. I was so scared to miss it with Balenciaga. I was so scared that I would not be able to put the brand back on the map."

On how you know you're experiencing design block:

"That’s what I think when people do their “best stuff” collection. [laughs] When you start to think, “Oh, I will just present my 10 years of work,” that’s not a good sign."
